Advanced Greenland Paddling Instruction

A kayak isn't complete until you add the paddler. Alone, it's just a shell sitting high on the water, but when you add the paddler it comes to life and moves across an amazing range of conditions: from crushing surf to quiet moonlit estuaries. More than any other type of boating, the seaworthiness of a kayak derives largely from the paddler and his or her skills.

Skills are the key to safety and enjoyment of kayaking. There are many ways to acquire these skills. I believe for most people, the best way is through customized instruction in small groups. For the more advanced paddler, learning occurs at the boundaries between different kayaking disciplines. Do you want to master tidal current and the surf zone? Lets go white water kayaking. Do you want to develop a fast stroke so you can lead the pack? Spend time with a racer's wing paddle. Want to be at ease in deteriorating weather? Get comfortable in the surf zone.

I am certified by the ACA to teach white water kayaking, and open ocean coastal kayaking. I also have my ACA endorsement to teach traditional kayaking with skin on frame boats and skinny "2 by 4" paddles. I use wing paddles, Greenland paddles, canoe paddles, and the common "Euro-paddle". I use all of these paddles when I teach since different paddles emphasize different facets of kayaking.

If this sounds interesting to you, contact me at qajaq@inkdrop.net. I teach primarily in the south Puget sound area, but I also make frequent trips to Portland, Oregon.
