My father's middle name is David, and he has been known as Dave for all his life. My middle name is David, too, and some people called me Dave when I was younger. It's a natural alternative for me to go by my middle name. Also, by following my father's convention, it makes me feel as though I have the honor of keeping my father's name alive for one more generation. At my generation, the Miller name through my father's lineage will end because my two children have different last names.
To make it easier for other people to remember to call me David or Dave, I have legally changed my name from Randall David Miller to David Randall Miller.
