My birth certificate says that my first name is Randall. I never liked that name. It sounds too stuffy, formal, and pretentious. And I never liked the short form, Randy. Even as a little kid, I didn't like my name. As I grew older and the Internet made the world a smaller place, I encountered the word "randy" more frequently in common usage. Anyone who is familiar with British English hears the word "randy" as meaning "horny" or "sexually aroused." Some people giggle at my name. Imagine my embarrassment when I greet a Brit, "Hi, I'm randy and how are you?!" I have a teenage daughter who lives in England. I can just imagine the conversation: Friend: "What's your dad's name?"
For most of my life, I've wished I had a different name. Now, in my middle age, I have found the courage -- or silliness -- to change my first name. |
