Dave Miller - on the edge...
Mr. Miller comes from a long line of
Appalachian Mountain Folk. He is one of Daniel Boone's many
great great great great great grandchildren. Dave 's father was
born in a cabin in West Virginia, then later delivered U. S. Mail
on horseback. Dave's mother shot the dinner if it got too close
to the house.
For health reasons, his parents moved to Phoenix, Arizona,
where Dave was eventually born with the aid of electricity and
running water. After Dave, their firstborn, they promptly
stopped having children.
Dave has lived in Arizona, Utah, Georgia, the Bay Area (Sunnyvale,
California), and finally settled for life in the Portland, Oregon
area. So far, he has visited 48 of the fifty states and is
waiting for a good reason to visit Hawaii and New Hampshire.
Dave has had a lot of hobbies and interests. His passion is
the study of comparative religion -- eastern and western
traditions. (His personal philosophy leans toward Advaita Vedanta.)
He has a pilot's license with a glider rating. He has been a
member of a caving club, and has performed magic (read about the toasted phonebook). He has enjoyed book
collecting, writing, travelling, lockpicking, bookbinding, ham radio (KJ7UY),
shortwave listening, photography,
public speaking, and travel (Click here for Dave's travels in South America in 2002.). He enjoys camping, backpacking in the rain, and
getting his four-wheel drive into places that make his passengers
remember the Lord's Prayer. He loves target shooting and is an
NRA Certified Instructor. Dave has recently discovered that
rolling a kayak is a good way to stay cool in hot weather. When stuck indoors, Dave enjoys getting on the Internet
and reading English-language foreign newspaper sites.
Dave has been involved in various volunteer activities. For a
while he helped answer a hotline and performed public speaking
for the Center against Sexual Assault in Phoenix, Arizona. He has
also worked with the Federal Bureau of Prisons and the Multnomah
County Jails in providing counselling services to
inmates.
